Single Parenting By Dave Kettner
Single has seemingly become an acceptable norm which is unfortunate. Single is a completely different world to regular (households with a father and mother). Though single can get lonely, resist treating your children like substitutes for a partner. Working online or telecommuting is one of the best ways that you can manage stress and single parenting. Being a single parent, you may wonder if you and your children will make it through.
Single parents often feel isolated, alone and different. Single parents with healthy support systems usually feel better mentally and physically and demonstrate to their children that it is okay to ask for help. Searching out the programs and grants available to single parents can be time consuming, but well worth the effort. In the past twenty-five years, the number of single parent families has more than doubled. Support groups for single parents offer an excellent opportunity to socialize and share with others in similar circumstances.
Parenting and Support
Parenting is one of the most rewarding activities a person could undertake. As with so many aspects of single parenting, we rise to the challenge and become better people because of it. We as parents are often overwhelmed and lacking the skills necessary to do a good job. But good solid has less to do with the number of parents in the home and more to do with the quality of parenting.
New Guides Added to Quick Reference Guides Section
The newest quick reference guides are: Self-Editing Guide, Need-to-Know Grammar, Cliches "to avoid like the plague," and Proofreaders' Marks. The Self-Editing Guide lists tips to help writers edit/proofread their own work. Need-to-Know Grammar is a list of basic grammar that everyone should know (everyone who would like to improve his/her writing skills). The cliches page is a list of cliches -- overused -- expressions that make writing dull. This is an ongoing list. More cliches will be added. The Writing Tutor accepts suggestions from visitors. The proofreaders' marks page lists and defines each of the copy editing symbols used in journalism and publishing. Proofreaders' marks ensure that the writer and the editor understand each other.
Single will require you to be a sympathetic mother plus a strict and providing father at the same time.
Support from friends, other family members and the church or synagogue can help too. One of the greatest responsibilities we have is to support ourselves and others in living at our highest and best. Parent support groups are a terrific way for parents facing similar, challenging situations in life to offer each other encouragement and share ideas. Single parents say they have been successful when they have optimistic attitudes about themselves and the future. It also helps when single parents have support and in times of emergencies, open channels of communication time, and supportive relationships with family. It is important no matter what situation you are in to allow children to be children, and find other adults for companionship and support.
Whether a parent is single by choice, as the result of the other parent’s death, or due to divorce, single is often very challenging. Single often means altering your goals and plans, but with determination and job training, you can achieve greater security for yourself and your children. It is important to build a support network of other adults that understand the challenges of single parenting. It is never easy to raise a child alone, but if you follow a few simple guidelines, you will find it much easier to cope with the unique issues of single parenting.
